M16 - NGC 6611 - The Eagle Nebula and Open Cluster

Messier 16 (M16) is an Open Cluster of stars and emission nebula in the constellation Serpens, but is also located close to the constellation Scutum. It is believed to contain approximately 8,100 stars and is part of a diffuse emission nebula. The nebula is known as the Eagle Nebula and is an active star forming region. An area of this nebula was made famous by a Hubble Image known as the Pillars of Creation. M16 is located about 7,000 light years from earth. Its star region is approximately 15 light years across. The nebula region is several times larger at 70x55 light years. The open cluster was discovered by Jean-Philippe de Cheseaux in 1745-46. The nebula was discovered by Charles Messier in 1764.
